2011: S'East Leaders Divided over PresidencyThere appears to be a serious division among the governors and leaders of the South-East zone over the presidency in 2011, as the governors and other prominent figures in the geo-political zone seem to be taking conflicting positions on the issue. Some governors from the zone yesterday rose from a meeting in Enugu with a declaration that they were yet to take a definite decision on whether or not to support President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2011 election. This is in line with the position of the pan-Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, and a former governor of the old Anambra State, Chief Chukwuemeka Ezeife. While Ohanaeze Ndigbo gave a tacit approval for the All Igbo Summit...

What is this Ohaneze really ?Ohaneze-ing??I recently failed a simple test. A middle-aged woman in my village asked me who the President of Ohaneze Ndigbo is. I said, ?I don?t know.? Bewildered, she turned to my friend: Ralph Uwechue. My friend replied. Her face-picture didn?t seem to recall or link that name to anything except, a name. For me, it was like floating between the burden of stark ignorance and the freedom of blamelessness. Why shouldn?t I know the name of my cultural-head? But again, why should I when he does nothing to be known for? For those of us new to this name, ?Ohaneze? is the umbrella...

Igbo Summit And Its Countless ControversiesOpinion leaders from the South-east last week took a stand on the whether to support President Goodluck Jonathan in 2011 or not. Christopher Isiguzo writes on the controversy that trailed the decision At last the much talked about South-east Political Summit was held last week and expectedly, instead of using the gathering to address the long years of disunity which had retarded development in the zone, the obvious cracks which exist among the leaders became more conspicuous. It was initially thought that the objective of the gathering which had centred on drawing up the position of the people of the zone in the ongoing debate concerning the 2011 presidency and zoning, would have served as a...

2011: Northern Young Turks Clamour for 'New Face'A new platform of several Northern governors and young professionals is moving for a "generational power shift" in the region's bid for presidency next year, THISDAY has learnt. The movement, which is named "Nigeria Redemption Group", is pushing for a "new kind" of Northerner to emerge as the candidate of the ruling party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), although they claim not to have any preferred candidate. Meanwhile, after days of suspense, the much-awaited South-east political summit to draw up the position of Ndigbo in the ongoing debate on the 2011 presidency and zoning was held yesterday in Enugu with a clear endorsement of President Goodluck Jonathan to run for the exalted position...

Prolonged Absence of Yar’AduaThe polity has become increasingly overheated following the prolonged absence of President Umaru Musa Yar`Adua from office and his refusal to hand over the reins of power to his deputy, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan in accordance with constitutional provisions. In the next few days, the President would have been away for three months, leaving a very dangerous vacuum at the seat of power. He left the country precisely on the 23rd of November, 2009 for Saudi Arabia on a medical emergency to attend to a life-threatening heart condition. For this length of time, no Nigerian except perhaps members of his immediate family has been able to see or speak with the President. Until it became evident that the...

2011: S'East Govs on their Own, Say Igbo LeadersLess than two weeks after the five governors of the South-east states formally excluded themselves from contesting the 2011 presidential poll, prominent leaders of the zone made up of Ohaneze leaders, pro-democracy and human rights activists yesterday came down hard on the governors, insisting that they were on their own. They noted that the governors only barred themselves, stressing that every qualified person from the zone who has either a presidential or vice presidential ambition is free to join the race and would not be stopped by anybody. They maintained that time had come for the Igbos to chart a new course for themselves especially as the nation prepares for the next general...

Yar’Adua: Criticisms Trail S’East Govs’ PositionWhile the controversy generated by the failure of ailing President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua to transmit a letter to the National Assembly before proceeding on medical vacation since November 23, 2009, is yet to settle, governors of the five South-east states, last week, gave him a clean bill of health. But their position has drawn the ire of the people of the zone, writes Christopher Isiguzo The controversy trailing the long absence of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua from the country as a result of ill-health occupied centre-stage during the meeting of the governors of the five South-east states which took place at the Government House, Enugu last week. The meeting expectedly gave the...

Photographs: Frank Miller CATHERINE REILLY Nigeria's Igbo tribe numbers tens of thousands in Ireland, but many refuse to accept the status of the man who was crowned their king in 2008, Matthew Emeka Ezeani A STRIKING photographic portrait greets visitors to Matthew Emeka Ezeani's office in Dublin. Dressed in wig and gown, his hands neatly clasped, the Nigerian looks a picture of gravitas on the day of his admission to the roll of solicitors in England and Wales. What really grabs the attention, however, is a framed certificate on a cabinet underneath, proclaiming him king...

Remembering Zik in a season of mourningOn Tuesday, May 11 Nigeria was in a mourning mood. Many official activities had been either suspended or scaled down to observe the one week of national mourned declared by the government for the late President Umaru Yar?Adua, who died five days earlier in Aso Rock. May 11 every year is set aside by Ohanaeze Ndigbo to remember the father of modern Nigeria, Nnamdi Azikiwe, who died on that day in 1996. This year?s Zik symposium organized by Ndigbo Lagos took place at the Lagos Resource Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos, a smaller venue compared to the more elaborate outing that the Zik memorial has been known for over the years. Kalu Onuma, administrative secretary of Ndibgo Lagos, explained...

Yar'Adua’s Setting Bad Precedent, Says Ohaneze ScribeChief Nduka Eya is the Secretary General of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohaneze Ndigbo. In this interview with Christopher Isiguzo, Eya reviewed the state of the nation and blamed President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua for refusing to hand-over to his deputy, Goodluck Jonathan, to act as president in his absence. He also spoke on other issues, including the ongoing constitutional amendment process In your honest view, how would you rate the performance of the Yar’Adua administration? Yar’Adua is a good man, going by his antecedents. If he is sick and knowing the demands of the office of the President of a country, he should not toy with it. You saw Bush, when he started as a president...

Boko Haram: Igbo boycott meeting with Borno govtIgbo people in Maiduguri have expressed disappointment with the Borno State government over its alleged nonchalance towards the welfare of victims of Boko Haram Islamic sect attack in the state. The people boycotted a meeting between the government, Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, and other southerners residing in the state on the incessant killing of non indigenous people by the sect’s members, Monday, claiming that government was not serious with their plight. Real Challenges Before NdigboIt is 40 years since the end of the civil war. By October this year, Nigeria will be 50 years as an independent nation. Our people say agbacha oso, aguo mile. I believe, therefore, that this is the moment in our lives as a major nationality in this country when we must sit back, take stock and chart a new course for ourselves and a clear vision of where we must be in the next 50 years and in the next 100 years. In doing this, I agree with earlier speakers that we must not dissipate energy in the singsong of the woes of yesterday. I say so because the people we lead expect to draw inspiration from us not the lamentations of marginalization. They expect us to show them how to deal with the...

Jan '66 Coup Planned by Revolutionaries, Says StudyForty-four years after the January 15, 1966 coup, a team of researchers from the University of Southern Florida, United States, yesterday faulted the widely held belief that the action was masterminded by the Igbos, saying that it was not an Igbo coup. The study revealed that the coup was organized by revolutionaries who were motivated by events that took place in the Democratic Republic of Congo that led to the death of Patrice Lumumba. They also pointed out that the intention was to make the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo the Prime Minister, stop the mayhem in the West and the genocide in Tiv land. Addressing newsmen in Enugu yesterday as...

Nigeria bids farewell to Biafra leaderSoldiers fired a 21-gun salute at the funeral of Odumegwu Ojukwu on Thursday as Nigerian leaders paid final respects to the man whose 1967 declaration of Biafran independence sparked a civil war. Forty-five years after he tried to split Nigeria asunder by proclaiming the Republic of Biafra, Ojukwu's coffin was draped in the national colours of white and green at the funeral service in the city of Enugu, attended by thousands. Ojukwu died in November in Britain at the age of 78 but his body was only flown back on Monday. Hundreds of armed police and security forces were deployed on the streets...
